Someday I'll Get The Truth, Until Then I'm On My Own
Why is it that Google is telling me the current weather is "light rain" when it has been a downpour off and on all afternoon, I've heard thunder, seen lightening, and the national weather service is telling me about flood and tornado warnings?

'Light rain' has nothing to do with the severity of weather at hand. The words are used to describe the measured amount of rain in a given time frame - usually an hour.
Rain severity definition used by the National Weather Service:
Light = up to 0.25 cm per hour
Moderate = 0.28 to 0.76 cm per hour
Heavy = greater than 0.76 cm per hour
'Heavy' rain is such a downpour that you probably couldn't see across the street through it.
