You don't need to make an offering of beer. I like people who have not brought me beer.
But it certainly helps.

I have to agree, I've never had beer in my possesion when I've met Buckethead, but it's always been in a place where beer is readily available.

This is because it's good to have a beer around. It's better to have many beers around, however.
